Gavin Williamson, MP for South Staffordshire, officially opened the Age UK Day Care Centre in Wombourne last week, alongside District Councillor Diane Holmes.
Over 160 people use the Centre each week and they provide a wide range of meaningful activities that focus on strengths and abilities which help maintain daily living skills in order to retain independent living for as long as possible. In addition the service provides their carers the opportunity to re charge their batteries in order that may continue to provide their support to their loved one.
For the past decade Age UK South Staffordshire has developed day services for older people who have dementia, a physical disability or other complex needs and provides day care in centres across the region in Penkridge, Cannock, Tamworth and now in Wombourne. The new centre will enable a further 50 older people to access this invaluable service each week.
The Centre has also recently applied for planning permission to locate 4 respite beds on the first floor of this building. These beds are always high in demand and will help and support carers to continue with their caring role.
Guests are supported by a committed team of staff who are professional trained and who also benefit from help and support from a team of volunteers who provide additional support from activities, conversation, games, crafts, trips and excursions.
After his visit Gavin commented: “I was honoured to be asked to open the new Age UK Day Care Centre in Wombourne last week. From touring the facility and speaking to the staff, I am sure that guests at the Day Care Centre will really enjoy spending time there, meeting new people, stopping them from feeling isolated at home. I know the centre will provide a fantastic service for those that use it in the community of Wombourne.”
