Police have warned that rogue traders are active in the South Staffordshire area.

There are confirmed reports of suspicious behaviour, leading to an alert being issued.

Be on your guard

Police are warning residents to be on their guard following reports of the rogue traders in the Essington area.

A man approached residents at their home in St John’s Road, at around 11.15am on Tuesday (15th January) demanding money for gardening work that had not been requested or completed.

The suspect is described as white, 6ft tall, and of a medium build. He was wearing a black cap, waterproof jacket and dark jeans.

Two men involved

He left the location in a black 4×4, possibly a Nissan Navara, driven by a second white man.

Stop, chain, and check

Lidia Hooley, Community Engagement Officer at Staffordshire Police said, “We would like to remind the public to never allow any unsolicited visitors into their home, or agree to works being completed by doorstep traders.”

She continued, “Please warn elderly and vulnerable neighbours to follow the STOP, CHAIN, CHECK rule when people call at the door.”

The routine should be …
STOP – If you are not expecting anybody and they don’t have an appointment, don’t let them in.
CHAIN- Use your door chain or bar before opening the door.
CHECK – Ask to see ID and double check this.

Contact police if you see anything

Local residents are encouraged to contact the police immediately if they have any suspicions about doorstep callers.
