V.E. Day Commemorated as Local Artist creates World War 1 Studies

As we celebrate 70 years since V.E. Day this month local artist known as Dex has created a series of World War 1 studies.

They are available to buy as originals and prints. Derek also makes commissions for homes, offices or alternative gift ideas.

We spoke to Derek Baker and found out a little bit more about him.

I am a self taught artist based in Wombourne –  South Staffordshire. My style is very much an observer of life and form with an element of fun and colour. I love people; capturing their facial expressions, the way they hold their body, the movement of their hands and the way they interact with other people and their surroundings. This style forms my most popular work though I do also enjoy creating realistic paintings of people, animals and landscape-city scenes.

In May 2012 I was invited by the BBC to commemorate The Queens Diamond Jubilee alongside nineteen other artists.  The venue was the Millennium Bridge – River Thames – London on Sunday 3rd June with the brief to “capture the moment” as 1,000 boats travelled along the Thames. We were filmed painting on the bridge, which was broadcast live on the BBC hosted by Anneka Rice. Despite the weather being extremely windy and wet I went on to complete the painting back at my home which received excellent  publicity in the Staffordshire and Midland newspapers. I am currently working on a new set of paintings which I aim to exhibit later in the year.

Are you looking for a unique gift to celebrate a special occasion such as wedding, birthday or anniversary? Take a look at my website for examples of commissions I have undertaken, capturing loved ones either as a portrait or in fun portraiture style, combining elements of their lives such as hobbies or workplace material etc. Working from photographs supplied by clients there is no need for long “sittings” though I do work in the more traditional method from time to time. The photographs need to be of good quality and I am more than happy to meet with you to view them and discuss your requirements. Should you prefer I can take the photographs for you, unless of course you are looking to surprise someone.

I work in various mediums depending on what you are looking for and my work is supplied in size A3 mounted and framed. The overall size being 20 inch x 16 inch though I can accommodate a larger piece if you require. Price is dependent on your individual requirement though typically £250 for a piece as described.
