The following is a Press Release from the Wombourne Youth Action Team. The official launch will be the10th July from 12-14:30.
Young people of Wombourne solving their own problems!
A Multi Use Games Area for the community of Wombourne has been kicked into action by local young people. The MUGA is now being built on the existing basketball court on Brickbridge lane.
As an original group of five young people, we started a group called MUGA along with the PCSO’s, local Youth Worker, C&LP Co-ordinator and Parish Council towards the end of 2007. MUGA joined forces with the local youth forum, WYAT (Wombourne Youth Action Team) in 2008 as the project started to grow.
To get advice on building a MUGA we talked to the Youth Service, Police, the C&LP and our local District and Parish Councils. We also held an open day where we consulted with local residents to get their opinions on the MUGA. We handed out letters and flyers, appeared in local press and gave presentations to local groups.
In order for the MUGA to become a reality we successfully acquired £45,000 from the Staffordshire Youth Service Youth Capital Fund. Councillor Robert Reade also supported the project and provided £1,000 towards the installation of a security camera from the Staffordshire County Council Local Community Fund. Councillor Robert Reade said “I am very keen to support the young people with this project; they have worked very hard to secure the Multi Use Games Area for the Community of Wombourne”. South Staffordshire District Council also provided £800, and £3,500 came from the Wombourne Community and Learning Partnership.
The building of the MUGA commenced on the 29th March 2010, and is scheduled to be completed very soon. WYAT has arranged an official Grand Opening on Saturday 10th July. This will include a range of activities designed for young people and families in the local area to come along and enjoy.
More details regarding the Grand Opening of the MUGA will be released shortly. The Wombourne Youth Action Team would like to thank everybody who has helped turn the MUGA project into a reality, and hope that the community enjoys it as much as we do!
